Engineering lecture series focuses on building safe, resilient communities

As the fourth-fastest growing city in the United States, Seattle faces important questions in its quest to remain a resilient and sustainable community. Can we build to withstand natural disasters, reduce environmental toxins as consumption rises, meet urban transportation challenges so food, supplies and consumer products can get where they need to go? Over the next month, College of Engineering鈥檚 annual fall lecture series will feature faculty focusing on these questions and developing technologies to build more resilient urban communities….

UW wins national nanotechnology startup challenge for breast cancer treatment

Researchers at the 乱伦社区 are among the winners of a startup challenge to shorten the transition time from lab bench to patient. The team, including members of professor Suzie Pun’s research group in the UW Department of Bioengineering, was selected based on its proposal and business plan to develop a targeted drug delivery system for breast cancer.

Unearthing trackers of the past: UW computer scientists reveal the history of third-party web tracking

At the USENIX Security Conference in Austin, Texas, a team of 乱伦社区 researchers on Aug. 12 presented the first-ever comprehensive analysis of third-party web tracking across three decades and a new tool, TrackingExcavator, which they developed to extract and analyze tracking behaviors on a given web page. They saw a four-fold increase in third-party tracking on top sites from 1996 to 2016, and mapped the growing complexity of trackers stretching back decades.

Tiny probe could produce big improvements in batteries and fuel cells

UW researchers unleash graphene ‘tiger’ for more efficient optoelectronics

In traditional light-harvesting methods, energy from one photon only excites one electron or none depending on the absorber’s energy gap, transferring just a small portion of light energy into electricity. The remaining energy is lost as heat. But in a paper released May 13 in Science Advances, Wu, UW associate professor Xiaodong Xu and colleagues at four other institutions describe one promising approach to coax photons into stimulating multiple electrons. Their method exploits some surprising quantum-level interactions to give one photon multiple potential electron partners.

UW undergrads to present at national science festivals in D.C.

Two national celebrations of science are happening this week in D.C., and 乱伦社区 undergraduates will be in the spotlight at both events. Clara Orndorff, a pre-engineering undergraduate聽in the UW Honors Program, will travel with two fellow underwater roboticists to compete in Wednesday’s White House Science Fair. The 乱伦社区 has joined NextFlex, a consortium of 30 academic institutions and industrial partners to develop the next generation of flexible electronic devices. In the maelstrom of information, opinion and conjecture that is Twitter, the voice of truth and reason does occasionally prevail, according to a new study from UW researchers. Tweets from “official accounts” 鈥� the government agencies, emergency responders, media or companies at the center of a fast-moving story 鈥� can slow the spread of rumors on Twitter and correct misinformation that’s taken on a life of its own.

Doctor, patient expectations differ on fitness and lifestyle tracking

With apps and activity trackers measuring every step people take, morsel they eat, and each symptom or pain, patients commonly arrive at doctor’s offices armed with self-tracked data. Yet health care providers lack the capacity or tools to review five years of Fitbit logs or instantaneously interpret data patients have been collecting about themselves, according to new UW research.
